The tool matters far less than the content. Draft your content first in a plain document you control, then pour it into whatever builder or word processor you choose. This keeps you portable and makes tailoring faster later.

1. Collect your raw material in one private document: every job title, employer, location and dates, plus tools, certifications, training and results you can prove.

3. Write a contact line with your name, city and state, phone, a professional email and one relevant link.
4. Write three to five bullets for each recent role, starting with a precise verb and ending with scope or a result; see our list of resume action verbs.
5. Add education, certifications and a grouped skills list, then write a two- or three-line summary last, once you know your strongest points.
6. Paste the content into your chosen builder or a blank word processor document with one font and two heading sizes.

A resume holds enough personal information to be valuable to scammers, so share only what an employer needs at the application stage. Florida State University's career center notes that information like a Social Security number or driver's license number should not need to be provided during application processes. The Social Security Administration's Ticket to Work program similarly advises never giving sensitive details such as your Social Security number or bank information early in hiring; legitimate employers usually ask later, often on the first day of work.
