Job market report 2026: open jobs by platform, work location and role
7,077,787 job listings were open across 9 applicant tracking systems when we counted the Applystead job catalog on September 30, 2026: where they are hosted, how many are remote, and what US employers are hiring for.
Key findings
- 7,077,787 job listings were open across 9 applicant tracking systems; 2,592,451 of them (36.6%) were added in the 30 days before capture.
- Workday hosts 3,301,159 listings (46.6%), the most of any platform. Workday, SmartRecruiters and Oracle Taleo together host 90.1%.
- 639,083 listings (9.0%) are marked remote and 2,211,954 (31.3%) not remote; 4,226,750 (59.7%) do not state a work location. Of the listings that do, 22.4% are remote.
- 1,810,754 listings (25.6%) are in the United States, and 178,025 of them are marked remote: 16.0% of the US listings that state a work location.
- Cloud, platform, DevOps and SRE roles lead US role families on both counts: the most listings (49,310) and the highest share marked remote (33.7%). Backend engineering roles have the lowest share marked remote (22.5%).

Methodology
The figures come from the Applystead job catalog: job listings collected from employers’ public career sites hosted on 9 applicant tracking systems (Workday, SmartRecruiters, Oracle Taleo, iCIMS, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever, Jobvite, Rippling). We counted them with one aggregate-only, read-only database query at 07:25 UTC on September 30, 2026. The query returns counts and dates only; it publishes no individual listing and reads no applicant, account or application data.
A listing counts when the catalog marks it open at capture. The counted listings were added to the catalog between November 29, 2025 and September 30, 2026 and were still marked open, so this is a snapshot of open listings, not a total for the year.
Each listing is counted once. Listings the catalog has merged as duplicates of another listing are excluded (0 were open at capture). The same role posted for several locations or on several sites can still appear as separate listings, so the counts are of listings, not unique positions or hires.
Excluded as well: 63,796 open listings whose address is a LinkedIn page, and 1,486,330 open listings from sources other than the 9 platforms above.
Remote and US come from the location fields the catalog records for each listing. 59.7% of listings state no work location type, so remote shares are given both of all listings and of the listings that state one. Role families come from the catalog’s automated job categories.
This describes the listings in the Applystead catalog, not the whole labor market: employers hiring only through other systems, agencies or job boards are not represented, and a platform’s share reflects how many employer career sites the catalog covers on it.
