How to use it

  1. Check your notice period. Look at your contract or handbook for the notice you owe. Two weeks is common, but your employer may ask for more or less.
  2. Fill in the details. Add your manager's name, the company, your job title and your last day. A reason is optional; many people leave it out.

Frequently asked questions

What should a resignation letter include?

The date, who it is to, a clear statement that you are resigning from your role, your last day of work, and a short thank you. A reason and an offer to help with the handover are optional but common.

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?

No. A resignation letter does not need a reason, and many people leave it out. If you add one here, keep it short and positive, because the letter may stay in your employee file.

Should I tell my manager before sending the letter?

Usually yes. Most managers prefer to hear the news in a conversation first, in person or on a call, and then receive the letter as the written record of your resignation and last day.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

No. The letter is filled in on this page, in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Applystead or anyone else, and nothing is saved after you leave the page.
