How to use it
- Add your resume. Paste the text of your resume or upload the file. The check runs in your browser, so nothing you add leaves your device.
- Read each marked phrase. Each result quotes a phrase such as “was assigned” or “were handled” together with the line it sits in, so you can find it in your resume quickly.
- Decide who did the work. Ask who did the action. If it was you, start the line with a verb: “Reports were prepared weekly” becomes “Prepared weekly reports for the regional manager”.
- Keep what reads well. Some passive phrases are fine, such as “was promoted” when someone else made the decision. Treat each result as a suggestion and keep the lines that already read clearly.

What is passive voice on a resume?
Passive voice puts the thing that was done at the front and hides who did it, as in “the budget was managed”. On a resume the reader wants to know what you did, so an active line such as “Managed a budget for four stores” is usually clearer and shorter.
How does this passive voice checker find phrases?
It looks for a form of “to be”, such as was, were, is or been, followed by a past participle like managed, given, written or led, with an optional adverb between them. That pattern catches most passive phrases, but it can also mark a phrase that is not passive, so read each one before you change it.
Is passive voice always wrong on a resume?
No. “Was promoted to shift lead” or “was selected for the leadership program” describes a decision someone else made, and saying so is honest. Change a passive phrase when it hides work you did yourself, and leave it when it reads naturally.
How do I rewrite a passive bullet point?
Find the action, then start the line with it in the past tense. “Customer complaints were resolved within a day” becomes “Resolved customer complaints within a day”. If the line has a result, keep it at the end so the verb and the outcome both stand out.
