How long employers take to reply to job applications
Of the first replies from a person at the employer that came within 14 days of a job application, the median arrived 2 days after the application was sent and 91% within 7 days (Applystead data, applications sent October 5, 2026 to October 22, 2026).
How long employers took to send the first reply from a person to job applications Applystead sent for its members, counted from the time each application was sent.
Key findings
- The median wait for the first reply from a person at the employer was 2 days, counting replies that came within 14 days.
- 32% of those first replies arrived within 1 day of the application, 66% within 3 days and 91% within 7 days.
- One in four first replies took longer than 4 days, and one in ten longer than 6 days.
- Mid-level titles: median wait 1 day, 90% of first replies within 7 days.
- Jobs marked remote: median wait 2 days, 90% of first replies within 7 days.
- These figures describe how quickly replies came when they came, not how often employers reply.
How fast first replies arrive
| Group | Median wait | Within 1 day | Within 2 days | Within 3 days | Within 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All applications | 2 days | 32% | 51% | 66% | 91% |
| Mid-level titles | 1 day | 40% | 60% | 75% | 90% |
| Jobs marked remote | 2 days | 33% | 49% | 65% | 90% |
What this means if you are waiting to hear back
When an employer does reply in person, it is usually quick: the median wait was 2 days and 91% of first replies came within a week. 9% came after day 7, so a reply in the second week is still possible.
A short, polite follow-up after a week or two is reasonable; keep applying to other roles while you wait.
Method and disclosure rules
Applications: tens of thousands of job applications Applystead sent for its members from October 5, 2026 to October 22, 2026, each one confirmed as submitted with evidence, and only those whose replies to the application's email address reach Applystead. Data captured November 6, 2026.
The first reply written by a person at the employer, such as a recruiter or hiring manager. Automated acknowledgements, application-system mail and rejections are not counted.
Wait: from the time the application was sent to the time the first reply from a person arrived. Only replies within 14 days are counted, and every application in the date range had the full 14 days, so a later reply is not in these figures.
Disclosure rules: a group is published only with at least 100 first replies, from at least 25 different members and at least 15 different employers. Shares are rounded to whole percents and waits to whole days (a median to the nearest day; the "longer than" waits down to a whole day). We never publish a figure for one employer, one application system or one person, or the number of applications.
Not shown this time: role family, employer industry, weekday sent. No group in them had enough replies to meet the rules; groups not listed in the table did not either.
Limits: the applications are those Applystead's members chose to send, most of them to engineering and data roles, so they are not a sample of all job seekers or all jobs. This study describes when replies arrived; it does not show that applying through Applystead changes how often or how fast employers reply.
Updates: we recount the figures each month with the same rules, and the date at the top changes only when the figures do.
