How it works
- Add your resume. Paste the text, upload a TXT, DOCX or text-based PDF, or take photos of the pages. Files and photos are read without AI, so you can check the text first.
- Add the job. Paste a link to the posting or the full job description. Some sites, such as LinkedIn, block automated readers; for those, paste the description.
- Review, refine and export. Read the tailored draft and ask the chat for changes, such as “make my bullets about Python work stand out”. Pick a layout in Full tailoring, then save it as a PDF or sign in to keep it.
Grounded in your resume. Every rewritten bullet is checked against your original resume. Titles, employers and dates stay as you wrote them.
5 free tailored resumes a day. No account or card needed. The count resets at midnight Pacific. A free account gives you 10 a day and saves your master resume and up to 3 tailored versions.
Export it yourself. Save it as a PDF with your browser's print dialog, or download plain text.
What tailoring a resume means
Tailoring a resume means presenting the experience you already have in the order and the words a specific job asks for. A recruiter reads the top of a resume first, so the achievements that match the posting should be easy to find and described in the posting's own terms where they are true.
The tailor reorders, emphasizes and rephrases what your resume already says. It never adds an employer, title, date or achievement your resume does not state, and when the job asks for something your resume does not show, the tailored draft leaves it out. Add it yourself only if it is true.
Example: one bullet, before and after
An illustration written for this page from the fictional example's resume and job, not a generated result. The job asks for SQL reports and Excel dashboards that help an operations team improve delivery times.
- Original bullet
- Created Excel dashboards to track delivery times.
- Tailored for this job
- Created Excel dashboards that track delivery times for the operations team.
The tailored line uses the posting's words, “delivery times” and “operations team”, and every fact in it comes from the original resume, which already names the operations team.
When to tailor your resume
- For every application you care about. Keep a complete resume as your master copy, and tailor a version for each job so the most relevant half comes first.
- When the posting stresses different skills. Two jobs with the same title can ask for different tools, duties and results.
- When you change direction. For a new field or role, lead with the experience that transfers; see how to write a career change resume.
Not sure how far apart your resume and the job are? Run the free resume keyword checker first, tailor, then check the result with the ATS resume checker.
Tips for a stronger tailored resume
- Start from a complete resume. The tailor can only use facts your resume states, so include your real results, tools and scope before you tailor.
- Paste the whole posting. Duties and requirements tell the tailor what to emphasize. Check which of the posting's terms you already use with the free resume keyword checker.
- Use the posting's words only where they are true. See how to find and use resume keywords truthfully.
- Keep the format simple. Read how to make an ATS-friendly resume before you export.
- Tailor by hand too. The full method is in how to tailor your resume to a job description.

Frequently asked questions
Is the resume tailor free?
Yes. You can create 5 tailored resumes a day on this page without an account or a card. The count resets at midnight Pacific time. A free Applystead account gives you 10 tailored resumes a day and saves your work.
Will it add experience or skills I don't have?
No. Tailoring reorders, emphasizes and rephrases what your resume already says. Titles, employers and dates stay as you wrote them, and a separate check compares every rewritten bullet with your original resume; a change it cannot support is undone. It is still AI-written text, so read every line before you send it.
What happens to my resume and the job description?
Your resume stays in this browser tab while you work. When you tailor, your resume and the job are sent to Applystead to write the draft. Applystead does not save them from this page; it keeps only a count of free tailored resumes per network, stored as a one-way hash of the IP address.
Can I paste a job link instead of the description?
Yes. Paste a secure https link to a public job posting and the tailor reads the posting. Some sites, including LinkedIn, block automated readers; for those, open the posting, copy the job description and paste it instead.
How do I download or save my tailored resume?
Choose Save as PDF (your browser's print dialog) or download plain text for application forms. To keep it in Applystead, choose Save and create a free account or sign in: your resume and the tailored version come with you, and you choose what to keep.
What does a free account add?
A free account saves your master resume and up to 3 tailored versions and gives you 10 tailored resumes a day in 20 layouts. No card is needed.
